Confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance are dangerous things.
“I refuse to join any organization that would have me as a member”.
Those sage words of wisdom come from the late Groucho Marx. The need to belong may be one of the most hazardous emotions lying within humankind. What part of yourself would you give up, to be accepted? How much of yourself will you never discover, because you subjugated your sense of self to a need to belong?
We all need to be with others. But we also need our own identity. It can be a delicate balance. The easy part is going along. The hard part is defining yourself, sometimes in defiance of the dictates of our peers.
